A Day at The Getty Museum

Y un día dijo mi pulguita: “Mami quiero ir a un museo de arte”

And one day my little princess said: “Mommy, I want to go to an art museum”

Y me puse en modo ‘Planeación – Investigación – Logística Activa’. Investigué lugares, y más lugares. Investigué desde que obras especiales y exhibiciones temporales habían, hasta tips para aprovechar el lugar y el tiempo en él. El mejor día para ir y las horas más convenientes, y pues como tengo algo de meteorólogo reprimido en mi (jajaja) también ver cómo iba a estar el clima para ir cómodas y no ir muy modo playa ni muy modo esquimal.

So I put myself on ‘Planning – Research – Logistic’ mode. I researched many places and which ones had special exhibits and work; I even looked up tips to take a better advantage of the time we were going to spend at the museum, which ones were the best days to visit and the most convenient times. While researching all this information I also looked at how the weather was going to be, that way we could be prepared and not wear too many layers or risk feeling cold.

Todo esto sin que ella supiera para dónde íbamos porque quería que fuera sorpresa y ¡lo logré! No supo hasta que llegamos al lugar. Modo secreto, hasta el punto que para que el GPS no me delatara me puse en el carro audífonos (solo el izquierdo para poder charlar con ella en el camino y escuchar música, porque no solo es mi copiloto favorito sino que es mi DJ) y que solo yo escuchara las direcciones.  

I did all this secretly so she wouldn’t know where we were going, I wanted to keep it a surprise and I did it! She had no idea where we were going until we got there. It was top secret, lol, to the point that while driving I had headphones on so she wouldn’t hear the GPS and figure out our destination (I had only the left one on, so I could chat with her and listen to music – she is not only my copilot but also my favorite DJ).

Entramos a la línea para ir a los parqueaderos y empezó a ver avisos, imágenes, y finalmente el nombre del lugar.

We got on line to enter the parking structure. She started seeing some signs of exhibitions, and then she saw the name of the location.

Llegamos a The Getty. ¡Y el día fue un éxito!

We had arrived to The Getty Museum.  And the day was a success!

The Getty Center (“El Centro Getty”) localizado en  Brentwood, Los Ángeles, California (Estados Unidos).

The Getty Center is located in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California.

El Centro Getty funciona como un campus donde se encuentra la sede principal del Museo J. Paul Getty. La entrada a The Getty es gratis. Lo único que se paga es el parqueo y tiene un costo de U$15, pero después de las 3p.m. el costo de parqueo es de U$10.  El estacionamiento es subterráneo y tiene 7 pisos. Nosotras parqueamos en el piso 5 y aunque cuenta con excelente ventilación, y no es muy evidente que estas 5 pisos bajo tierra, si se siente algo diferente (mi pulguita me dijo: “Mami, siento algo extraño, salgamos rápido de acá.)

The Getty Center is a campus where you can find The Getty Museum. Entrance is free. Parking costs U$15, however, after 3p.m. parking is only U$10. The parking structure is underground, and it has 7 levels (So, if you don’t like closed spaces, make sure to wait for your party before you enter the parking structure). We parked on level 5, and even though it has good ventilation, and you can’t really tell you are underground, you do feel a bit strange (my daughter told me she was feeling a bit strange, and if we could just hurry to the elevator.)

El campus cuenta con lugares donde se puede comprar comida, o uno puede llevar su snack y comer estilo picnic, o en alguna de las áreas asignadas con mesas. No se permite comida, ni bebidas en las salas de exhibición. Nosotras llevamos nuestro snack, pero la verdad estábamos tan distraídas que prácticamente no comimos durante nuestra visita a el Getty Center.

*El museo Getty está cerrado los lunes.

The campus has restaurants and booths to buy some food and/or beverages, but you also have the option of taking some snacks and have a picnic at some of the designated picnic areas. Food and beverages are not allowed in any of the galleries. We had taken some snacks, however, we were so distracted and having such a fun time that we didn’t really eat during our visit to The Getty.

*The Getty Museum is closed on Mondays.

Es un lugar para visitar durante diferentes épocas del año, ya que sus exhibiciones cambian, y para disfrutar el cambio en los jardines debido a las estaciones. Un solo día no es suficiente para visitarlo completamente y disfrutar cada área. Definitivamente, hay que regresar!

It is a place to visit at different times throughout the year since its exhibitions vary, and you get to enjoy the season changes of the amazing gardens. You will not get to see everything in one day, it’s not enough time. We will definitely visit again soon!

Definitivamente, amo compartir y aprender con mi pulguita. Amo sorprendernos juntas. Amo sonreír y disfrutar cada momento a su lado. Amo que ella me enseñe. Amo crecer con ella.

I just love being a mom, being able to spend time with my daughter, creating memories, smiling, enjoying the big and little things. I love growing up with her.
